Jonny and Steven both went camping on Friday, but not together. Steven went with his 11 year old scout troop. They camped in Deception Pass State Park (just down the hill) and did a service project. He had a blast and came back with a huge smile on his face. Steven now has his 2nd class in Boy Scouts and is really loving it.
Jonny on the other hand, went with the older scouts on his first snow camp ever. It was just warm enough to rain and rain it did everyone was getting soaked. Jonny was pretty well off since he had his sailing foul weather gear with him. Several of the boys had good warm clothes, but once they were wet, they got cold. Jonny kept checking on the boys and asking them math questions to make sure they were ok. One of the boys was cold, shaking, and couldn't even tell the difference between a sleeping bag and a sleeping pad. He sent him home. Jonny said he didn't sleep at all. He kept checking on the boys through the night and waiting for their snow caves to cave in on them. He had brought several extra sleeping bags. This turned out to be a good thing. Some of the boys' bags got wet. Yet, surprisingly enough, he too came home with a huge smile on his face. He said that was the most fun he had had in a long time ... BOYS!!! He is already making plans on how to make it better next year.
We finished the day by going to the Cub Scout Dessert Auction. It was a fund raiser for Cub Scout Day Camp. It was fun and they met their goal . They had some fun creative desserts.

Rebecca went and chopped her hair off. Now it is practically a mullet.

Isaac made a pretty cool foil boat.
All his own design. I did some minimal help with the rigging.
In other news, Joshua thinks he is big enough to start crawling. He can also push himself from his belly into a sitting position. Now I really have to make sure the legos are off the floor.
For about 9 years I have put the kid's hand prints on a Christmas tree skirt. We finally filled one and have begun on the second. When babies are involved I usually strip them so that they don't get paint on their clothing. I never thought I should have to worry about my clothing though-- Thank you Joshua!! 5 sets of hand prints take up a lot of space. Maybe I should think up a new tradition.

Week 2
So we managed to get his weight back up. Big relief! But in the process of supplementing, my milk supply went way down. The doc said that as he nurses, my milk will increase. Tuesday night I came to conclusion it wasn't happening. I needed my milk up so that he could learn to latch on, but I needed him to latch on in order for my milk to go up. AARRGGHH!!!
Wednesday morning I called Le Leche League. May I just say, I LOVE LE LECHE LEAGUE!!! Julie made a two hour drive (1 hour each way) to get me an awesome real double pump. She came to my home, set me up, and did her best to assess Joshua. She said, "If they aren't nursing, it is because they cannot nurse. All instincts are pointing them towards that end so if it isn't happening, something is in the way. She noticed a few things that may be causing the problem. His tongue isn't doing a wave action like it is suppose to, but is bunched up in the middle. Consequentially, he is trying to compensate by using his entire mouth muscles to do the job. But this is fatiguing. He tries but tires and lets go, tries and lets go. She noticed that his lower jaw is receded. She admits that she does not know if it is enough to cause problems but she suspects that it is. It is called mandibular hypoplasia. This could have affected the development of his tongue. She recommended a breastfeeding specialist in Seattle. I set up an appointment for next Thursday. Julie's help was spread over the course of the day. She came, left, and returned with more information and pointers. She left me with a finger feeder. This little device will syphon the milk through a flexible tube I place on my finger, he then sucks on my finger instead of plastic nipples. This will help reduce nipple confusion. She showed me a different position that would help him latch on better with his jaw. I was SO grateful for her help.
But wow, what a lot of work this is going to take. I am already tired and overly emotional. Do I call the Relief Society for more help, dinners and child care? Do I put my other children second for the foreseeable future? If so, I have no right to return to college classes in July. Is all of this worth it? Is it necessary? I'll have to figure it out. I will continue down this path for as long as I feel impressed to do so. I just hope I quickly learn the lessons of this trial so that it won't be long.
And then to top it off, he now has thrush; just one more thing to make this difficult.
Well tomorrow will be an important day. Isaac is going to be baptised and confirmed, and then Joshua will receive his baby blessing. We are doing it at the same time so that family will not have to make extra trips. Jonny's Dad is here from Arizona for the events, so this is the time. I'll try to get in a shower before then.

A Cool New Resource: fun with math
We have found a fun, new math resource.
I first heard about Times Tables the Fun Way by Judy Liautaud when I visited the Montessori school in Lakeside. Math facts for 3's, 4's, 5's, 6's, 7's and 8's have a fun story to help the children remember it. I looked it up and Judy Liautaud has also written a similar book for the addition facts. My budget would only fit in one, so I decided to start with Addition the Fun Way.
Daniel and Isaac are really picking up on these. Each number is a cartoon character for example, 3 is a bee: the 3 bee. 6 is always sick. Some are silly, but others are pretty good. Either way, it seems to work.
Memorizing math facts are important, yet I also do not like the idea of memorizing by rote without understanding the concepts behind it. So we have also pulled out the dominoes. We have a set of double nine dominoes which are perfect for generating addition problems from 0 - 9. So we pick out a domino at random, say it the problem, maybe write it on the white board and then talk about the story. Then they count the dots to make sure we are right. It is fun to see.
Another fun game we have started playing is Addition War very similar to traditional War. We use a stack on number cards with each player having half of the cards. To play, the players each pull off the top two cards from the deck and lay them on the table. The two cards are added together. The player whose card add up higher get all the cards on the table. Much funner than timed sheets.

Happy Birthday Isaac
Isaac is 8
Poor Isaac. His birthday was practically forgotten with the move and all - Half of us in Washington, the other half still in Arizona. Since his birthday was on General Conference Day, he didn't even get to pick what he watched on TV. But he enjoyed it. He got balloons and his favorite cake with sprinkles and M&M's for the ice cream. Grandpa Berg got him a DVD of the Three Stooges. I have mixed feelings on that one. He loves physical humor and knew he would like the Three Stooges, but I didn't want him to decide to start imitating it. Well, that hasn't started yet, but he does like the Three Stooges.
